Layla’s Story

Meet Layla; she was born and raised on Poruma Island in the Torres Strait Islands group. After applying for a casual position on ramp with Star Aviation, Layla has been successful in gaining a permanent position in the team at Moranbah due to her excellent work ethics and dedication. Layla’s dream is to build her empire through hard work, focus and commitment.
Get to know more about Layla:
– As a descendant of the Kulkalgal people and, she can speak her Traditional language of Kala lagaw Ya and Creole.
– At age 13 Layla moved from her Island to begin schooling in Cairns, Weipa and Bundaberg before settling down in Brisbane.
– After school, Layla represented the Queensland Indigenous Woman’s football team before moving to Moranbah with her brother (1 of 9 other siblings!).
– Through all her changes Layla has just recently be accepted into the Rugby league First nations women’s Gems training squad with an opportunity to represent her people in the curtain raiser at the annual Indigenous All Stars rugby league match in February 2018. A huge achievement to make the squad.
